Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the second habitant of the Mountain gorillas in Uganda after Bwindi National Park and they are the only places in Uganda keeping the Mountain gorillas. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has one habituated gorilla family (Nyakagezi group). The Park is found in the western parts of Uganda near Kisoro town.
For you to organize gorilla trekking tours in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, you will need to buy gorilla permit three weeks earlier before your tour. The gorilla permit costs US$ 600 and it is easier to use the tour companies to purchase the gorilla permits on your behalf especially those from very far though it is also recommended to use the best tour companies for better services.
If you owe any balance, you will be told to clear it on your arrival and after clearing your balance you will be escorted by the company’s professional guides to where you are to spend the night till morning when they will take you to the Park for the gorilla trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
On your arrival in the Park, the Park consists of many lodges, hotels and camps where you can stay in during your tour and these shelters include Mountain Gahinga safari lodge, Mucha hotel, Travelers rest hotel, Amajambere Iwacu community camp, Kisoro tourist hotel and others.
There are some rules which have to be followed during gorilla trekking and they include; you have to be physically fit because the activity is somehow tiresome during the moving in thick forests in search of the gorillas, you are advised to be calm and maintain maximum silence, you don’t have to smoke during gorilla trekking, you should be clean, no use of flash light cameras and for toilet manners you will be allowed to dig a hole aside of the forest and after you have to bury the hole very well.
A group of 8 individuals is only allowed in a day to do gorilla trekking and you will be allowed to stay with the gorillas at most 1 hour. You are not allowed to stay with the gorillas for so long and you will watch them 5 to 7 meters from where they are to prevent the spread of diseases to the gorillas.
Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga national park starts at 08:30am. In the park you will also have chances to do other activities such as birding, Sabyinyo volcano hike, golden monkey tracking and the Batwa trail. During the gorilla trekking, you will be allowed to go back to your lodge and have lunch. Still at the lodges of the park, breakfast, lunch and supper is offered.
After your gorilla trekking, you will then go back to your lodge for supper and the overnight till morning when you will be aided by the company’s guides to take you back to Kampala for a flight back to your home country.
